Standard: Show Content Tip
2g Students know plant and animal cells break down sugar to obtain energy, a process resulting in carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (respiration).
Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.
| Page A11 introduces the concept which later has moderate coverage on pages A21-A23, especially page A23. |
Aspects that help student learning: Table on page A23 compares photosynthesis and cell respiration, and correctly states that cellular respiration occurs in both plants and animals.
Aspects that do not help student learning: The California Science Framework notes that respiration in lungs refers just to exhaling carbon dioxide, and is a limited use of the word. Cellular respiration is not the same as breathing. This potential confusion is not addressed in the text.
