2g Students know plant and animal cells break down sugar to obtain energy, a process resulting in carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (respiration).

Pages 32-33, 39, and 350 provide limited coverage of this standard.


Aspects that do not help student learning:
The California Science Framework notes that respiration in lungs refers just to exhaling carbon dioxide, and is a limited use of the word. Cellular respiration is not the same as breathing. This potential confusion is not addressed in the text, and the publisher may promote this confusion by citing page 400 as addressing this standard.

Diagram on page 350 incorrectly states that all living things take in oxygen for respiration. For some organisms, oxygen is toxic.
