2g Students know plant and animal cells break down sugar to obtain energy, a process resulting in carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (respiration).


Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.
Activities in "Food and Nutrition" Investigation 2 (pages 11-16, 20-21, 24-25, and 28) teach that yeast break down sugar to produce carbon dioxide. Together with the Science Stories (pages 14-15, 41-43 and 48-49), they provide moderate coverage of this standard.

Aspects that help student learning:
Activities support the text in terms of the breakdown of sugar by yeast to produce carbon dioxide. The California Science Framework notes that respiration in lungs refers just to exhaling carbon dioxide and is a limited use of the word. Cellular respiration is not the same as breathing. This text teaches that fact at the end of page 43.
