Standard: Show Content Tip
5c Students know the path of a planet around the Sun is due to the gravitational attraction between the Sun and the planet.
Holistic Rating: Limited coverage of this standard.
| One sentence in the sidebar to the illustration on pages B34-B35 provides limited coverage by stating that the force of gravity keeps planets in orbit around the Sun. |
Aspects that do not help student learning: Text mentions only gravity as the physical force involved in planetary orbits. Gravity holds the planets in connection with the sun and prevents them from flying off into outer space. Inertia prevents the planets from crashing into the sun. As the California Science Framework notes (page 78), planetary orbits result from the combined effects of gravity and inertia.
