1d Students know that each element is made of one kind of atom and that the elements are organized in the periodic table by their chemical properties.

See CONTENT TIP for this standard for additional resources to help teach about the periodic table. The periodic table is organized by atomic number which relates to the number of protons in the atom's nucleus. If you do not want to emphasize the names of subatomic particles, you can simply say that the atomic number increases as one goes from left to right and moves line by line down the periodic table top to bottom, and that atomic number refers to the number of parts inside the atom.

Aspects that help student learning:
Illustrated periodic table on pages C48-C49. Activity on page C55 can help students relate the periodic table to elements in their lives.
