Standard: Show Content Tip
1a Students know how to design and build simple series and parallel circuits by using components such as wires, batteries, and bulbs.

Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.
Pages C38-C43 provide moderate coverage of this standard.

Aspects that help student learning:
Instructional materials combines graphics, text and activities.

The Performance Assessment on page C63 is essential for student understanding.

Aspects that do not help student learning:
There is little instruction for the opening activity (simple series circuit). Only activity with parallel circuits is in the performance assessment on page C63. Students will need more experience with constructing and diagramming parallel circuits to develop their understanding.

Graphics on p. C42 will need further explanation. Illustrations are readily susceptible to misinterpretation.

Text does not sufficiently stress that the circuit has to be from one end of the battery to the other.

Students may not recognize the symbol for a resistor as representing a light bulb in Question 27 on page C63.
