Standard: Show Content Tip
1d Students know the role of electromagnets in the construction of electric motors, electric generators, and simple devices, such as doorbells and earphones.
Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.
| Pages C54-C57 provide moderate coverage of this standard. |
Aspects that help student learning: The diagram of the fire alarm on page C54 illustrates the role of the electromagnet.
Aspects that do not help student learning: In the electromagnet on page C55, it does not appear that the wires are connected to a power source.
In the body of the text students do not experiment with electromagnets.
Although graphics on pages C54-C56 appear impressive, they do not sufficiently help explain how these devices work at a level that is both accurate, and that can also make sense to and be remembered by students. So the focus must be on the very general role that electromagnets play in these devices (see CONTENT TIP).
