Standard: Show Content Tip
2b Students know producers and consumers (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and decomposers) are related in food chains and food webs and may compete with each other for resources in an ecosystem.

Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.
Pages A68, A70-A77, A82-A83 and A108-A123 provide moderate coverage of this standard.

Aspects that help student learning:
Pages A82-A83 teach about competition for resources.

Aspects that do not help student learning:
Text has limited coverage of the concept of competition within ecosystems. Text contains a lot of information on relationships (producers/consumers) but very little on competition. The text on pages A108-A123 contains a lot of information on different ecosystems, but does not focus on food chains, food webs, or competition for resources.

The pyramid shown on page A83 should not be confused with an ecosystem energy pyramid (page A78).

Omnivores are not mentioned and the coverage of decomposers is limited. The ecosystem pyramid shown on page A78 does not include decomposers (see CONTENT TIP).
