Scratch test activity and illustration on pages B34-B35 gives students direct experience with a diagnostic test. Including the fingernail, penny, knife and glass in the hardness scale on page B37, facilitates student understanding.

Students could use more practice using charts to identify minerals, especially those cited in the standard.
