Standard: Show Content Tip
5b Students know natural processes, including freezing and thawing and the growth of roots, cause rocks to break down into smaller pieces.

Holistic Rating: Limited coverage of this standard.
Pages A10-A13 and A18-A24 provide limited coverage of the standard.

Aspects that help student learning:
Page A10 defines weathering and erosion. People often think that erosion includes the breaking down of rock. This text clearly defines weathering as the process of breaking rock, and erosion as the process of moving sediment from one place to another.

Aspects that do not help student learning:
Freezing/thawing and growth of roots are treated in a very limited way. Sections in text on effects of wind and glacier do not adequately use the language of the standard about breaking rock into smaller pieces. This has to be inferred, rather than being emphasized.

Teacher's Edition that we used cited these pages as addressing this standard, but we did not find a significant correlation:
A6-A13, A16-A22.
