Standard: Show Content Tip
2b Students know how blood circulates through the heart chambers, lungs, and body and how carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2) are exchanged in the lungs and tissues.

Holistic Rating: In-Depth coverage of this standard.
Pages 44-47 in the "Food and Nutrition" Science Stories provide in-depth coverage.

The California Science Framework distinguishes between the functioning of the left and right sides of the heart. This is not explicitly stated in the standard. The section cited on "Blood: The Fluid That Connects" includes a diagram showing the four chambers of the heart and how they function in conjunction with the lungs. Note that the right and left sides of the heart are described from the perspective of the person looking out from their body. Thus, the right side of the heart is shown on the left in the diagram. This standard terminology could be confusing to students unless it is explained to them.

Aspects that help student learning:
Graphics and diagrams correlate well with the text.

Aspects that do not help student learning:
Learning is entirely from text with no active learning opportunities in the student text.
