In September 2001, California received a grant from NSTA to implement their Building a Presence for Science project in our state. Five partners who work statewide in science education collaborated to design and manage CABAP. These partners are:

WestEd - serves as the CABAP contractual and fiscal agent
California Department of Education
California Science Project
California Science Teachers Association
K-12 Alliance

CABAP also collaborates with many local organizations and networks such as County Offices of Education, large school districts, local networks (such as the San Diego Science Alliance), and informal science centers.

WestEd (www.wested.org)
WestEd is a nonprofit research, development, and service agency. As one of the nation's Regional Educational Laboratories, WestEd serves Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah. Our work also extends throughout the rest of the United States, as well as internationally. WestEd's Mathematics, Science, and Technology Program is committed to supporting increased scientific and mathematical literacy among our nation's youth. To that end, the program offers services and other support aimed at enhancing the efforts of those who provide K-12 science and mathematics education.

Art Sussman is the state coordinator for CABAP. Libby Rognier is the Project Manager at WestEd.

California Department of Education (www.cde.ca.gov) and (www.cde.ca.gov/ci/sc/)
The CDE provides resources for assessment, curriculum, instruction, and professional development in science education. They provide regular Science Updates on policy, resources and funding opportunities, and access to publications such as the Science Content Standards for California Public Schools, and the Science Framework for California Public Schools.

Phil Lafontaine, Manager of CDE Mathematics and Science Unit, is the contact for CABAP.

California Science Project (csmp.ucop.edu/csp)
The California Science Project (CSP) is a university-based professional development network for teachers of science at ALL levels. This statewide network works toward the common goal of improving science education for all students in California. CSP sites exist across the state at campuses of the California State University, the University of California and independent colleges/universities. For the past 12 years, the CSP has been, and continues to be, a regional provider of services to schools and districts seeking to strengthen their science programs and science instruction consistent with the California Science Framework and the California Science Content Standards. The CSP regional sites continue to grow across the state of California.

Maria Lopez-Freeman, Executive Director of CSP, is the contact for CABAP.

California Science Teachers Association (www.cascience.org)
California Science Teachers Association (CSTA) represents science educators statewide - in every science discipline at every grade level, Kindergarten through University. CSTA demonstrates leadership in science education in the state by organizing and participating in statewide reform initiatives and provides leadership opportunities for members who wish to serve on state advisory committees, including framework, standards, and textbook committees.

CSTA publishes California Classroom Science, a bi-monthly newsletter, and the CSTA Journal, a quarterly magazine. In addition, CSTA sponsors the largest state conference designed specifically for science educators statewide.

Christine Bertrand, Executive Director of CSTA, is the contact for CABAP.

K-12 Alliance (www.k12alliance.net)
The K-12 Alliance (CSIN SPAN SS&C) is a statewide organization dedicated to improving student performance and achievement in mathematics and science in California. The K-12 Alliance is committed to working with all segments of the educational system and its supporting communities. K-12 Alliance professional development centers around enhancing teacher content knowledge, addressing teacher practices and beliefs, facilitating pedagogical techniques that are effective for all students, analyzing student work for conceptual understanding and student growth, engaging administrators and the community in reform efforts, and developing teacher leaders.

Kathy DiRanna, K-12 Alliance Director, is the contact for CABAP.
